When I enrolled in the Youth Connections program I didn’t really know what to expect. Working through the various workshops I was able to refine my resume and cover letter, practice my interview skills, and prepare myself to enter the workforce. The confidence I developed working through the program was just what I needed to make my job search successful. The Youth Connections program turned out to be a very rewarding experience.

When I came to Youth Connections, I was a drug addict that lived on the streets and worked for temp services. Also, I was an Apprentice Electrician that couldn’t find work. I needed help with finding work, way off the streets and making sure that I was in the right field of work. Youth Connections helped me write out and update my resumes, find companies in the Electrical field that were looking for help, build a plan on how to get off the streets and into counseling, and took job messages for me when I did not have a phone. Now I am a self-supporting, high school graduate with a Journeyman Electrical Ticket. Thank-you for the support, direction, and encouragement that you gave with a smile when I felt no one else cared. Thank-you for highlighting that there was hope and that in time things would get better.

I always wanted to live in Canada because of her peaceful society, amazing ability to be the ‘mosaic of cultures’ {not melting pot}, its natural beauty, lower crime rate and balanced international policy. My close relatives in Canada also always had positive things to say about this beautiful country inviting me to move to this ‘dreamland’. Hence I moved to Canada from NY after successfully completing my Masters degree in Pharmacy and working in retail pharmacy for more than three years. I had excellent references, strong communication skills, methodical approach, and strong organizational skills. My emotional bank was also brimming with golden dreams, rainbow of hopes and resolute faith. I thus had ALL the possible ingredients for success!! Or so I thought!! My first wakeup call came when despite spending two months visiting various pharmacies and pharmaceutical companies, dropping resumes and meeting people I did not get a single interview call – On follow up I was told that I was either ‘over-qualified’ or lacked Canadian experience!! Visits to career centers and placements agencies also did not bear fruit!! The biggest shock was the demoralising attitude of other international professionals - doctors, engineers, pharmacists - who had been very successful professionals in their countries of origin but who had given up all hopes in Canada. They were either driving cabs or delivering pizzas or living off welfare with no actual desire to seek work!! They probably meant well but their conversations always alluded to me joining THEM (either deliver pizza or go on welfare). None of these options were acceptable to me as I felt that these would be an antithesis to who I am and what I stand for! After two and half month I ended up working as a (unpaid) volunteer in a retail pharmacy gaining valuable Canadian experience for a few months before finally landing an actual job in Edmonton. I was happy to be back in a professional environment and busied myself in preparing for the pharmacy licensing exam – my preceptor; a pharmacist with more than 20 years experience was a very kind person and wonderful human being. I also started spending lots of time and most of my money buying books for the exam (in addition to paying the hefty fee). However success seemed to elude me despite my hard work and efforts. I did identify FIVE key challenges. First - lack of proper roadmap on approaching the exam which not only included information but also needed structure and format. Second was the overcoming the feeling of doom and loss due to the pressure, hefty fee and the negative vibes coming from those who had given up. The third was a lack of a platform where I could interact with Canadian grads and also do mock scenarios. The fourth was ambiguity about the ‘rights and wrongs’ - I could spend hours ‘finding’ answers to problems/ issues but had no means of knowing if those were indeed the correct answers ! The biggest challenge was the loss in self confidence and self respect that comes from a person becoming NO-BODY, being jobless and object of either ridicule or pity!! Bredin Institute’s International Pharmacy Bridging Program provided solutions to lot of my challenges. The structured class room setting provided me with the roadmap to concentrate my effort and energies. A combination of hard plus soft skills in an environment where there were others in the same boat as I provided the sense of balance and the ‘ground’ to stand up on. It also provided a platform of interacting with Canadian grads and Canadian University instructors as well as a practice lab for MOCK scenarios honed my professional skills. These also provided a direction and lessened the ambiguity and uncertainty about correctness or otherwise. The biggest advantage was the rebuilding of self confidence and self respect which indeed is the most powerful ally for an able professional. I worked very hard, completing all my assignments and focussing on the appropriate areas of opportunity and was finally successful in realising my dream of becoming a licensed pharmacist. I received job offers from ALL companies that had interviewed me and finally decided to accept a management position in a brand new pharmacy in a location of my choice! I would like to see this bridging program flourish and grow and hope that all other professionals in Canada also get access to programs like these so they too could realize their dreams and serve the society in a much more productive manner fortifying not only their own lives and the lives of their loved ones but also their fellow Canadians!

After receiving my BA in Sociology and working in the private sector for about a year, I had decided to upgrade my education in order to find work in a different field. Enrolling in the Human Services Worker program at Bredin Institute was exactly what I needed to do in order to make that change. The program allowed me to build on past education and work experience and gain new knowledge and experience in a short period of time. The instructors and staff at Bredin are extremely supportive and knowledgeable. A month after completing the program, I received a job offer from the Government of Alberta. As an Information Officer, I help people understand and apply for government programs and resources. I learned about a majority of these government programs while in the Human Services Worker program. I really enjoyed the program and have since recommended Bredin to others looking to upgrade or gain further education in the Human Services field.

As a person looking to upgrade my career choices, I couldn’t have chosen a better group of people than the team at Bredin Institute. They eased my job search fears and reaffirmed my confidence to accomplish my goals. First they updated my resume. Karen made me sound so great – I am, but had never had my attributes explained so well. The format was so professional and stylish. I was very impressed. Next she helped me with cover letters, using words I wouldn’t have thought of to introduce myself. We did a few so I was very familiar with them. Doris was a great help at the hidden job market. She gave me job leads and showed me how to access the internet to find more information. It had been many years since I had job searched so the help was much appreciated. Karen practised interview skills with me by going over what questions could and would be asked in an interview. I felt confident that I would breeze through an interview and I did. I landed my dream job 3 weeks later, and loving life again after being stagnant for so long. From the moment I walked through the WorkSource doors and Robin greeted me I knew I was in the right place to get the help I needed. The changing job market is not easy to keep up with and these ladies were very helpful in every way that mattered. I am grateful for all the services they offered and will always remember their kindness. Thank you Bredin Team.

Since starting this program, I had a chance to review intensively therapeutic choices about different medical conditions. I became more familiar professionally communicated in a real pharmacy practice, patient counseling, employment readiness and pharmaceutical care management. Most importantly, I had a chance in a pharmacy lab, Mock OSCE to have feed back so I can correct my mistakes and be a better and competent pharmacist in the work place. I would like to say Thanks to all Bredin Institute’s staff and management that worked so hard to make all learning possible for us to be a competent pharmacist. You did an excellent job!!

During my time as an International Pharmacy Graduate at Bredin Institute, I found the program to be most helpful in several different areas such as pharmaceutical care, Therapeutics and Ethical issues in Pharmacy care. From my point of view, this is one of the best programs available in Canada. No program in Canada is providing 3 Mock OSCE’s before their final OSCE program. Due to this program I was able to find my placement at Wal-Mart. Furthermore, instructors are really friendly and they provided you help in every area of pharmaceutical care with real life examples. So there are a lot of things to learn; which I would not have learned if I had not joined this program.

I came into the Bredin Institute seeking help and direction, after I had been laid off from a position that I had for 17 years. I had a feeling of fear, loss, and uncertainty - this was a difficult time for me. I would like to say that you guys were a fantastic support for me in my job search journey. Karen, you helped me revamp my resume which opened doors for several interviews. The workshops were great in helping me develop skills and confidence for interviews - something I had not taken part in for 15 years. I want to thank the staff for taking the time to really listen to me and help me look at what type of job would be a good fit for me. Ricki, I thank you for lending a listening ear always and for the great resources you offered - because you were really listening - I did get hooked up to the job that I feel will be a great fit for me.

I am very impressed with the service I have received at the Bredin Institute. I had a team of experts help me with formatting my resume, sending me job leads weekly and classes from resume writing to interviewing. The best part of the services is that it is free. I have tried other work search services before, however, it did not compare to the help I received at the Bredin Institute. Thanks Bredin for the great service. I would recommend it to any of my friends.

I immigrated to Calgary in 2002 after working as an electrical engineer in India for 10 years. In Canada, I was a stay-at-home for 6 years during which I took care of my kids. I was lacking confidence when I decided to restart my career in Engineering. Bredin Institute turned out to be a great stepping stone towards my re-entry in the engineering workforce. Most of the subjects were very relevant and useful. I could gain my confidence back through the course. It acquainted me with the 'Canadian' working style. Employment Readiness, English for workplace and PPE examination preparation was truly helpful. Bredin also focused on getting us APEGGA registration which was very useful. I passed my very first interview and I am very grateful to Bredin for that.

It is a fact that Bredin Institute made me ready to be a pharmacist in Canada. The Pharmacy Bridging Program was very useful in assisting me to face the challenges of the PEBC exam and knowing the way of the licensing exams and how to study. It was useful in many other ways such as: Therapeutic review in improving my communication and counselling skills, studying Canadian law and ethics in preparing me to face my exams to practice pharmacy in Canada, studying Alberta College of Pharmacists laws and code of ethics, getting to know other international pharmacists taking the program and listening to their experience, creating a good resume for the Canadian employment market which will help in finding a job and starting practice in a Canadian Pharmacy.

The most helpful thing about this program is that it prepared me for the challenge of being a pharmacist here in Edmonton and overall in Canada. It opened the door for me to know what exactly I am expected to do to be a good pharmacist, what is my role of a pharmacist in the community, and how do I fulfill my duties. The program saved me a lot of time in networking as it provided me with an environment of colleagues and different experienced international pharmacists who were in different stages of their registration. It was a window that opened to me to assist me to understand the Alberta Health Act and the Federal Act. I ended up working in a pharmacy where I didn’t have to ask, ‘What do you mean by ---?’ because I just felt that I was well prepared with the techniques from this program to be a good pharmacist. The program has changed the path of my life to a better destiny and one with more options. Bredin Insitute’s staff is very friendly and supportive and the Institute is equipped with many valuable resources such as the most updated books in the field – for example CPS. The Canadian pharmacist letters put us in the present dynamic of the pharmacy knowledge and even the photocopy machine saved me money and time! Even my resume has the touches of a skilled team who guided me to write and put together a very strong resume. If there is anything I can do to say thank you enough to Bredin Institute, I would be more than happy to. Your support significantly made a difference in may life. I am now in the field working and enjoying being an internship pharmacist.

I am writing this letter to let you know of my experience with Bredin Institute. In April of 2008 I moved from BC to Spruce Grove, Alberta. I went to Spruce Grove City Hall and inquired about an organization that would assist (free of charge) me in finding work and was directed to the Bredin Institute. Upon arriving the staff was busy but made me feel welcome and important. Robin (Bredin staff) was able to give me a brief run down of what the Institute did and soon I met Jane (Bredin staff). She offered to test me to determine what position I would be best suited for. As well, she offered to help me with resumes, interview skills, etc. These sessions were very helpful as I did not know what career I should choose. While I searched for jobs at the Bredin Institute, I probably changed my mind on careers 9-10 times. The staff did not get upset with me at all about my indecision. They all continued to be professional. All had suggestions of where to go for work each time I changed my mind about the decision I had made and provided information for each career. This gave me a great insight to each possible career. Each of the staff has always greeted me with a smile and been very positive whenever I saw them. This I found to be excellent reinforcement to keep going for a career no matter what difficulties I met with. Also, I should point out that I came to them with tons of questions. If they did not know the answer then, they found out one way or another and would draw upon each other for help. This is what I recognized is a great team. They all got along so great together. It is nice to see and from my experience a rarity. I would like to give my opinion about each of the staff. I will begin with ROBIN: She was always friendly and polite to whoever came through the door. Over a period of time I began to approach her for help on the computer locating websites or finding information. When asked for help she would be there in a second and was extremely patient and thoughtful in her approach and would use all resources if needed to assist me. She eventually knew (using her peripheral vision) when I turned slightly in my chair that I was asking for help and without waiting for me to ask she would say "I'll be right there Shane". JANE quickly analyzed me and realized I didn't know exactly what I was going to do for a career. She explained what Bredin Insitute offered in terms of evaluations, resumes, and how to search for jobs at my fingertips and how to approach employers with great optimism. Whenever Jane saw me she always inquired how I was doing and made suggestions. She also oversaw staff and dealt with new people making everyone feel welcome and important. She holds and maintains her professional position very well. The Institute can be extremely busy to a point where I don't envy any of the staff of having their position. KAREN has always been very helpful and positive. I have placed many requests to assist me in writing cover letter, resumes, etc. She never turned me down when I requested these documents to be done. Karen made suggestions to enhance these documents. Despite my applications for positions in different fields, Karen did not get discouraged or upset with me and stayed the course. BRENT is my Case Manager at the Institute. He always made time to listen to me and make suggestions. He has offered information that has opened up new avenues of careers that I was not aware of or had forgotten. He gave greater insight into careers and kept me focused. He made many suggestions of what I would need to do to accomplish my career goals. Brent would not rest until he found information I was looking for. He is very positive. My overall view of these four people is that they are the best team that I have ever met. Their conduct towards each other and clients has always been beyond reproach. If this Institute was not in place, with this calibre of people, my life right now would be without a doubt in trouble with a very low probability of success. I could never be more grateful for the generosity and kindness and understanding that I needed to get going on a great career path.

I would just like to start off by expressing my appreciation for all the wonderful and outgoing help I received from the Bredin Staff in Spruce Grove. I arrived from Ontario not knowing the job situation in Alberta and how things work here and the procedure for securing a job in Alberta. I found it to be different than in Ontario. I was graciously guided through the steps and encouraged with positive reinforcement throughout my job search. I found them very helpful and the resources excellent. I would highly recommend anyone looking for employment to utilize the resources at the Bredin Institute due to the high quality of service that is given to help find successful employment. P.S.      The greatest challenge that I came across following immigration to Canada was finding a workplace that I can fit in as an internationally trained engineer. However, being a believing Christian, I didn’t lose hope in spite of this struggle. True enough, I passed the screening by Bredin Institute for the International Engineers Bridging Program. The course focused on technical and soft skills enhancement subjects made me confident that I can be a competent engineering employee in Canada. It was a real workplace environment preparation as it included technical computer aided programs and lectures. Technical Writing was very relevant. The soft skills enhancement portion helped me understand how to maintain productivity, rapport, teamwork, unity and cooperation in the workplace. Furthermore, the importance of being professionally registered with APEGGA was emphasized and Bredin facilitated guests and speakers to make us understand the whole registration process. The integration of the review and preparation for the NPPE exams to the course was one of the most significant events for me as I passed the exams on my first attempt to write it. I appreciated the unique way I was guided from resume/interview preparation up to the very extensive job search. Through this process, I was assisted in finding the job I know I can fit in. Truly, I believe the course has played a big role in starting my career in Canada.

I would like to express my commendation for Bredin Institute and especially for the staff at the Spruce Grove branch. My first contact with Bredin was to enlist their assistance and guidance to change my current employment in nursing, and then later on when I terminated my job, to continue searching for “that great job”. Their informative workshops and personal one-on-one service helped me to create a resume and specific cover letters geared to each position that I applied for. When I needed changes to my resume, and/or a cover letter to be proof-read and typed (and occasionally faxed to a specific employment opportunity that was time sensitive), Bredin staff accommodated my requests with efficiency and a great willingness to assist me in whatever way they could. They provided a lot of useful information on how to network and search for employment opportunities, and my Employment Developer searched for and provided numerous job leads accessed through their many sources. I was given significant guidance and advice specifically geared to each interview that I attended. Prior to my first job interview, Bredin set-up and performed a mock interview with me which positively influenced my confidence going into the real one, and others to follow. When I needed to re-certify my CPR and Standard First Aid Bredin assisted financially to enable me to take these courses. All the staff in the Spruce Grove and downtown Edmonton branches were personable and yet professional in all our interactions. Together they all contributed a wealth of information, gave thoughtful insights and unending support during my employment search, which influenced my efforts towards finding the job that I feel will be a very good fit for me. I have been accepted for an Occupational Health Nursing temporary position at a power plant and am hopeful it will eventually become a permanent position. Thank you Bredin Institute staff for your knowledgeable assistance and positive attitudes in helping me succeed in achieving my employment goals.

I feel compelled to write you this letter for the simple reason that I would simply have not made a success of myself in Alberta if it was not for the Bredin Institute's Spruce Grove Office. Upon arrival in Stony Plain, Alberta I had quite literally the clothes on my back and a very small amount of money and therefore time to find employment. At first glance, the newspaper looked very promising indeed with quite literally hundreds of jobs to choose from. Well it seems that although there are many people looking for employees, simply responding to these ads was not the way to be successful. I was at a complete loss as to what to do. I had what I thought were very employable qualities and yet I was not getting a single response to the eighty or ninety ads I had answered. Then, quite by chance, I happened to see the Bredin Institute office while visiting my Doctor in the Westland Market Mall. On a whim, I stopped in just to see what kind of expense I would incur to secure their help in finding employment. You must realize that by this time I was quite ready to give up and return East where at least I knew how the various Welfare Programs could be accessed. To my amazement I was warmly received by an entire team of professionals whose sole purpose seemed to be to assist me. This is not to say that they weren’t busy helping many others even as I arrived - as they indeed were. This caring, knowledgeable group of professionals assisted me immediately with their encouragement and understanding. Their empathy with my frustration and immediate assistance by such motivated and approachable professionals provided the supportive atmosphere necessary to gather myself and continue with my desire to succeed. The flexibility of these remarkable staff to provide resource material and job leads was an amazing thing to behold. They provided me with a driver’s abstract and a resume that I could hardly believe reflected my actual skills because it simply read so well. I would have hired myself instantly. They did not mislead or misrepresent me, they simply put all that I have to offer in the best possible light and this alone offered me a great sense of pride. I was, it turns out, a rather impressive person on paper. In fact, these young women found me several jobs to choose from; but perhaps the most impressive thing they did for me was to direct me into Security, an area my skill set seemed to point, they said. This new area of endeavor has been the most satisfying job I ever have had. It has in fact become a career that has been very rewarding to date and one in which I seem to be excelling. Even with my new found success these amazing young women are still very approachable and encouraging as recently I required assistance in preparing to move forward in my new career and they were once again there for me. Since I’ve never been more satisfied with my employment, I strongly believe that these wonderful young professionals should remain in place to assist others as long as they are willing to continue with their undying initiative to help others. I would be remiss to forget to mention just how important this Institution is to employers as well as individuals. I’m quite sure that many employers would testify to the fact that finding the best suited staff is an extremely difficult thing to do at this time in this Province. Furthermore, I’m certain that cost savings to these employers, due to reduced staff turnover and training costs, is impressive. In conclusion, one must agree that this small group of outstanding professionals has greatly benefited a very large number of people within Alberta. It is my sincere hope that these professional women receive the same joy from doing for others as others receive from their plentiful and respectful assistance. I suspect that since they are so professional in their approach, that regardless of their personal feelings they will continue to offer their unrelenting assistance simply because it is the right thing to do.
