Highlights: Alberta’s Labour Force
Statistics for August 2009
The following
information was obtained from the
Alberta Employment and Immigration
website:

Alberta’s
seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 7.4% in August 2009,
up 0.2 percentage points from July and the third lowest in the
country behind Saskatchewan’s 5.0% and Manitoba’s 5.7%. The
national average was 8.7%, up 0.1 percentage points from the
previous month.

While the labour force decreased by
2,900 people, employment fell by 6,700 people in August 2009
compared to the previous month. The number of people working
fulltime decreased by 11,300 and the number of those working
part-time increased by 4,700 for the same period.

Year-over-year, the labour force
increased by 56,200 people while employment decreased by 27,800.

Employment among women aged 25 and
over increased by 8,000 people in August compared to July 2009.
For men of similar age, employment decreased by 2,200 people
over the same period.

TBetween July and August 2009,
employment fell by 10,300 people in Manufacturing; 5,400 in
Trade; 3,300 in Transportation and Warehousing; and 2,800 in
Public Administration.
