Capital Health – Regional Nutrition and Food Services

Capital Health – Regional Nutrition and Food Services, has approximately 1100 employees that work in areas that involve patient meal assembly and warehouse roles.

 

The requirements they seek include grade 12 education, the passing of the English Language Assessment test, completion of a criminal records check, food service knowledge, ability to work in a fast-paced work environment and basic computer knowledge.

 

Potential candidates are screened primarily through a phone call to assess their English proficiency, and their availability.  An interview is then carried out and if hired, training is provided on WHMIS, First-Aid and Food Safe.  The chosen candidates are also paired up with someone experienced to learn about various roles.

 

Capital Health is also involved with various internship programs such as Careers the Next Generation.  As well, they have supported fourth-year Dietician students through internship opportunities.

 

Occupational Health and Safety Officer

There are a variety of educational options individuals who are thinking about pursuing this career can take.  Courses or programs related to this area are offered at the Alberta Construction Safety Association, University of Alberta Faculty of Extension, BCIT distance learning and NAIT.  As stated on the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals website, on January 1, 2009 all Canadian Registered Safety Professional applicants must, as a minimum, have successfully completed either:

  • a one (1) year college or university certificate or diploma program in occupational health, safety or environment or,

  • a two (2) college or university non-occupational health, safety or environment certificate diploma program.

 After completing an OHS program the individual can be employed within the provincial government in a developmental position that may entail working with various cases.  As well, OHS officers may find work in companies that have 25+ employees.  OHS officers may do work for the provincial government and the federal government but according to varying standards.

 

Skills and personality traits that are valued in this field include having the ability to accurately record data, mediate and handle conflict, be assertive, multi-task, work independently, make good judgments and work flexible hours.  Knowing how to use Lotus Notes is also a valuable skill.  Associations to research include the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals www.acrsp.ca and the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) www.ccohs.ca.

 

KidTropolis

It is a new “Kid City” that has opened in West Edmonton Mall on March 24, 2005.  They have various pavilions and kid moola to spread around to help children become aware of various careers.

 

Positions in Kid-Tropolis:

F/T and P/T Moola Misers - Cashier – required to have customer service industry and cash handling experience.

 

F/T Fun Bosses - required to assist in the facilitation of curriculum activities to children in grades k-9 and others will facilitate general pavilion activities.  They must enjoy working with children and parents.  Some Customer Service is necessary.  Experience working with children, along with excellent interpersonal, communication, organization skills and a professional demeanour is a must.

 

P/T Fun Bosses will assist in the facilitation of pavilion activities to all kids entering KidTropolis.  P/T Facilitators must enjoy working with children and parents having customer service/retail experience along with cash handling experience.
