ESSENTIAL SKILLS BEYOND TECHNICAL
KNOWLEDGE OF THE JOB OR PROFESSION
Strong technical skills are essential, but not enough, for effective
functioning in the workplace. Without strong communication and
interpersonal skills, appropriate personal attributes and values,
computer skills and industry knowledge, employment opportunities and
possibilities for advancement can be quite limited.
Communication Skills
Strong listening skills are necessary for understanding and following
instructions, and participating in meetings and group projects.
Speaking skills also enable people to communicate their knowledge,
actively participate in work processes and have influence. Employees
need to be able to efficiently and effectively read emails, memos,
reports and industry publications in their daily work life. They are
often required to create similar documents in the workplace and
communicate their knowledge in writing.
Interpersonal Skills
and Personal Attributes and Values
Every organization has a unique culture; however, all organizations seek
employees that can work effectively within its’ culture. In order to do
so, people need to be adaptable and cooperative. People who demonstrate
responsibility, integrity and problem-solving skills will be trusted,
and as opportunities arise will advance. In addition, a strong desire
to contribute, and high personal standards for quality of work and
relationships are keys to success.
Computer Skills
At
all levels of organizations, employees are expected to manage
information flow, generate technical information and use specialized
computer software. Technology continues to evolve, and people need to
continue to upgrade their computer skills and knowledge.
Industry Knowledge
Advances and innovations help people and organizations be more effective
and be ahead of their competition in meeting client and customers
needs. Knowledge gives power and freedom of choice. Public libraries,
the Internet, associations and newspapers are great sources of current
knowledge related to business and professions.
