INTRODUCTION

English language proficiency in all four areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening are vital to professional success in Alberta.  The following pages will provide information about recognized language proficiency examinations and English as a Second Language upgrading possibilities available in the Alberta region.

If the profession is governed by a regulatory body, clients will likely be asked to demonstrate their English proficiency in the application for licensure.  Typically, professional associations designate a list of acceptable English language examinations and corresponding scores the applicants must obtain.  For a listing of exams recognized by specific regulatory bodies, consult the “Getting Started: Preparing for Work in Alberta” section of this website.

If the profession assigns confirmatory or board examinations as a pre-requisite for licensure, clients should be aware that although the exams are evaluating technical or occupation-specific knowledge, a high level of English proficiency will still be required to pass.

It is recommended that if clients are not sure of their current English proficiency, and particularly if they have not taken a recognized English proficiency exam in the last two years, to book an appointment with their local Language Assessment Referral Centre to complete the Canadian Language Benchmark Assessment (CLBA).  The CLBA will provide clients with an idea of what their strengths and weaknesses are in English, and at that time, the appropriate ESL interventions can then be recommended.

Please note that although clients may be interacting and using English on an informal basis, that that may not be enough to improve critical English proficiency.  Some formal structured study may be crucial in order to increase one’s English to a level expected by employers.  Depending on a client’s current level of English, study of between 6 months to 3 years may be necessary.  A course listing by focus can be found in the section titled “ESL Programs”.
