PLANNING FOR SUCCESS
Arrival
Checklist
When
undergoing a move, it is normal to feel both excitement and uneasiness.
You will meet unfamiliar people and find yourself in new environments
with different social customs than you may be used to. Because there
will be a number of things you will need to do to fully integrate yourself
within your new city and make it your new home, we have put together
this information to ensure your experience is a pleasant and successful
one.
The
Alberta Learning Information Service (ALIS)
http://www.alis.gov.ab.ca/welcometoalberta/arrivalchecklist.asp has
created the following ‘Arrival Checklist’ of the steps you
need to take once you have moved to any city within Alberta:
·
Registering with the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan
·
Applying for a Social Insurance Number
·
Opening a bank account
·
Scheduling orientation services through an Immigrant Serving Agency.
You would also receive helpful information from this Agency about
meeting people with the same ethnicity and cultural background as yours.
·
Applying for employment and training. Should you need your
qualifications documents assessed or translated, visiting an Alberta
Advanced Education's International Qualification Assessment Service
would be beneficial
·
Arranging to improve your English language skills, perhaps, by taking
English as a Second Language (ESL) classes
·
If you
have children, taking the steps necessary to register them into school
